Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
